The Department of Statistics was established in 1996 by bifurcating the erstwhile School of Mathematical Sciences. The Department offers M.Sc degree programme in Statistics, M.Tech in Engineering Statistics and research leading to Ph.D degree.  The Department is actively engaged in research in the fields of Distribution Theory, Reliability Theory, Time Series Analysis, Stochastic processes, Survival Analysis, Demography, Population Studies, Chaos and Nonlinear Time Series.

It is presently a DST-FIST sponsored department. The UGC has identified the Department for Special Assistance at DRS level.

Students of this Department have succeeded in setting placements in several Government and Public Sector undertaking such as Indian Statistical Services (ISS), Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), Nationalized Banks, Spices Board, Bureau of Economics and Statistics, Govt. of Kerala, Nationalized Banks and Statistical software companies, in addition to teaching carriers in Colleges/Universities in and outside India.

The Department is located opposite to the University Post Office on the main campus of the University at Thrikakkara.
